A group of 8 students were given the incredible opportunity to attend the We Care Film Festival on 14 May at The US House in New Delhi. It was a truly profound and life-changing experience. The films shown were not just award-winning creations from around the world, but powerful narratives that deeply resonated with the lives, challenges and dreams of people with disabilities (PwD).

These movies gave a simple, heartfelt message: It’s okay to have struggles in life. What matters most is how we choose to move forward—with strength, hope and a smile on our face. We shouldn't let sadness weigh us down because if we look closely, we already have so much to be thankful for. God has given us a healthy body and the ability to live freely—and for that, we should be deeply grateful.

These powerful films made all present there realize how much a person with a disability—and their family—go through every single day. Simple things become big tasks. For instance, a person with a physical disability may struggle to climb stairs or open a door, while a person with a sensory disability may find it challenging to communicate or navigate their surroundings. Yet, they keep going. We often complain, saying, “Why me?” about small problems. But somewhere in the world, some children don’t have a bed to sleep, a single meal to eat or the chance to go to school. Some have multiple disabilities and never get the opportunity to live the life we sometimes take for granted.

It’s time to think about them, to believe each of us should have one small, but meaningful goal in life—to help at least one person in need. For even one act of kindness can make a world of difference.

FEEDBACK : We would like to thank ma’am, for giving us this beautiful and eye-opening experience. Your guidance and support have truly opened our hearts and minds. We will carry this learning forever and are deeply grateful for the opportunity you gave us.

Date of the Workshop 5th May 2025
Topic of the Workshop Special Olympics Bharat
Resource Person Mr.Sunil (Chairperson Salwan Schools)
Name of the Organization Apeejay School, Pitampura
Attended by Arshia Wakhloo

The session conducted by Special Olympics Bharat (SOB) 5 may had key focus on health and fitness for children with special needs, particularly CWSN (Children With Special Needs) and individuals with Intellectual Disabilities (ID). The central agenda of the session was to introduce and expand the concept of the Unified Fitness Club, a school-based initiative aimed at promoting physical health and inclusive sports environments. The Unified Fitness Club model encourages the participation of CWSN students in sports and fitness activities available within each school's facilities. Sports such as badminton, basketball, and others—depending on what the school can support—are used as means to foster inclusivity and physical development. SOB also provides an equipment kit to support the activities of such clubs.
A successful example of this initiative was shared from Tagore International School, where the Unified Fitness Club has already been implemented and is showing positive results.
Although our school currently does not have students with intellectual disabilities, a collaboration with Upasana, a dedicated sports teacher working with CWSN children, was proposed. Under this plan, each CWSN student from Upasana’s group will be paired with a non-CWSN student from our school, encouraging empathy, teamwork, and shared learning experiences. The Special Olympics Bharat team emphasized how critical this initiative is, especially since fitness is often a neglected area for children with special needs.
The session also covered the operational and technical aspects of setting up the Unified Fitness Club and reassured us that full support would be provided if we were to initiate this in our school. Mr. Arvind, who is a key member of SOB and the head of the new unified recreational model, has committed to guiding schools through the implementation process.
In addition to this, as the President of Inclusivity at our school, I expressed interest in organizing a sensitization workshop for senior students. The aim is to raise awareness about CWSN students through interactive and hands-on activities. The SOB leaders welcomed this proposal and tentatively agreed to conduct the workshop in July, bringing 10 students or more from Upasana’s group or their own leaders to work directly with our students. This session will mark an important step towards fostering a more inclusive and understanding school environment.
To conclude, the Special Olympics Bharat session was both informative and inspiring. It reinforced the importance of inclusive health and fitness programs in schools and presented a clear, supportive path to get involved. With the proposed collaboration between our school, Upasana, and SOB, we look forward to building an environment where all students, regardless of ability, have equal opportunities to thrive physically and socially.
