A group of ten students, from DPS Rohini were accompanied by Principal Ms. Kanika Sachdeva Govi and Ms. Manju Sangwan to visited Germany from 5 to 19 June 2024 as a part of the Indo-German Exchange Programme. The group received a warm welcome from their German partner school, Gymnasium Johanneum in Ostbevern, where a special welcome assembly marked the beginning of this enriching cultural exchange programme on the project theme— ‘The Concept of Happiness in India and Germany - A Comparative Study Concerning Socio-Political and Religious Aspects.’
After the assembly, the Indian students joined their German counterparts in attending classes, gaining valuable insights into the German education system. The students also engaged in a variety of recreational activities, such as swimming and horse riding, which allowed them to bond with their host families. They immersed themselves in local activities by plucking fresh strawberries from nearby farms and baking delicious cakes, adding a sweet flavour to their cultural experience. These activities not only fostered cultural exchange but also offered a profound understanding of the social aspects of happiness.
A meeting with the Mayor of Ostbevern offered students insights into local governance and community well-being, exploring the political dimensions of happiness. This experience was further enriched by an interaction with Sister Saera, who provided a religious perspective on happiness. These engagements were integral to the students' project on happiness, as they gathered data through interviews and discussions. The group travelled to Berlin for an informative journey, which included a scenic boat trip on the River Spree, a visit to the Reichstag dome and a guided city tour. These activities provided a comprehensive understanding of Berlin's historical and cultural significance. The students also visited Münster, where they explored the famous market and the Westphalian Peace Hall, as well as Cologne, where they toured the Cathedral and walked along the River Rhine. The students were spellbound by the spectacular architecture and bountiful nature, which enriched their understanding of happiness from a cultural perspective.
The highlight of the programme was the students' presentations, which brilliantly captured the essence of the entire project. Through creative visuals, compelling narratives, and collaborative efforts, they showcased their journey, emphasizing rich cultural exchange, mutual learning experiences and the comparative analysis of the various aspects of happiness.
The Indo-German Exchange Programme profoundly enriched our students, offering invaluable experiences and life lessons. Engaging in thoughtful discussions and exchanges, they explored serious political, religious, and social perspectives, significantly broadening their horizons. This programme equipped them with essential life skills such as time management, the art of using polite expressions and benefits of travelling light and spending responsibly. Immersing themselves in Ostbevern's agrarian society, they exposed themselves to a sustainable lifestyle, fostering a deep appreciation for environmental consciousness. Moreover, these experiences helped them challenge and transform their perspectives on various social myths, enabling them to develop a more informed understanding of different cultures and societal norms.
The next phase of the exchange programme is scheduled for October, when German students will travel to India. This visit will provide them with the opportunity to experience Indian culture and education system. They will continue to work on the project, ‘The Concept of Happiness in India and Germany,’ exploring the socio-political and religious dimensions of happiness from an Indian perspective. This upcoming exchange promises to further deepen the cultural ties and mutual learning between the students of both countries, enriching their life and educational experiences.
